You may not have heard of these bizarre medical treatments before. While some of these disgusting medical practices do work, some don’t, they’re still used as a measure to treat certain diseases.

Fecal Bacteriotherapy

Fecal bacteriotherapy (also known as fecal transplant, human probiotic infusion (HPI), or fecal transfusion) has been a promising treatment for patients suffering from severe, recurrent symptoms of inflammatory bowel disorder called ulcerative colitis and as an alternative treatment for patients with Crohn’s disease, pseudomembranous colitis (caused by Clostridium difficile) and also recurrent Clostridium difficile infection. The procedure involves a 5-10 day treatment with fecal enemas, made of bacterial flora from feces of a healthy person in which the donor’s feces (a sample of feces taken from a healthy donor is always tested for a wide array of parasitic and bacterial agents) are turned into a liquid form prior to anal insertion. It’s believed that healthy bacteria obtained from feces of the donor will grow in the patient to heal their condition. Sometimes, the liquid is also delivered via a tube in the nose.

Worm Therapy

Helminthic therapy, or best known as worm therapy, is claimed to be the cheapest, safest, fewer side-effects and a promising treatment for allergies, psoriasis, migraine, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease or multiple sclerosis (can cause progressive multi-focal leuco-encephalopathy, lymphoma and even death), asthma, Sjogren’s syndrome, multiple sclerosis as compared to modern drugs. It might be shocking when first considered a sick person is infecting with a parasitic worm, but research suggests that this natural immunotherapy is the best treatment for certain diseases in comparison to modern drugs that would be worth billions of dollars more than otherwise.

Helminthic therapy makes use of whipworm, hookworm or combination of hookworm and whipworm to treat patients. Often, on the course of treatment, patients can receive over eight doses of 2,500 worm eggs.

Smoking Therapy

You all know very well the dangerous health risk of smoking because it has over 300 carcinogens that have proved to be as damaging to the lungs of the smokers. Nevertheless, research has shown a 50% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease or Parkinson disease in smokers as compared to the non-smokers. Nicotine has also found to give an encouraging result especially in improving Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms and reducing the risk of developing ulcerative colitis. Still, I don’t agree with this type of therapy for adults and particularly not for teens and children.

Marijuana Therapy

Several researchers have advocated the use of marijuana as a drug and are focusing on benefits of marijuana therapy in adults and kids with ADHD. Even though marijuana is said to be beneficial to someone being treated for a painful disease, it can be awfully destructive to others. I strongly believe that the daily use of marijuana can leave many side effects. Well, not always will you see its destructive property, but the risk is always there. I don’t deny a positive change in the behavior of ADHD sufferers after smoking marijuana, but you must realize that, over the time, marijuana can begin to suppress the immunity, neurological and serotonin system, which can eventually result in depression. I think, besides smoking marijuana, there must be other best ways and methods to treat ADHD.

Bloodletting Treatment

Since ancient time, bloodletting has been used as a therapeutic measure used to withdraw blood, usually from a vein, in which patient was cut and a suction cup was positioned all over the wound to help remove blood, but in modern time, syringes are used for the similar purpose in order to cure or prevent certain ailments. It has been the most common medical procedure usually performed by doctors 2,000 years ago and it was also the oldest medical practice practiced by the Egyptians, the Mayans, the Aztecs, the Greeks and the Mesopotamians as well. Of course, it was also used widely around the time of Hippocrates.

It is said that bloodletting may be a good choice to reduce iron levels by removing blood volume which seems to have beneficial effect for people suffering from peripheral arterial disease (PAD- a partial or total blockage of an artery) but researcher claimed that bloodletting treatment only effective against PAD when it was given at a relatively young age of the PAD patient in the process of iron reduction. According to a clinical experimentation, excess accumulation of iron in the body can increase a risk factor for coronary heart disease, and thereby reducing iron accumulation in the body can simultaneously help reduce cardiovascular risk.
