Chopsticks reflect gentleness and benevolence according to the teaching of Confucianism. Under the cultural guidance of Confucianism, chopsticks became an ancient way of eating food for Chinese people since 5,000 years ago in China. Till today, chopsticks are common way of eating food for Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean people. Asian food seems to taste better when eaten with chopsticks.

In Mandarin Chinese, chopsticks is called kuàizi (筷子), hashi はし (箸) in Japanese,  jeotgarak (젓가락) in Korean and đũa in Vietnamese. It is usually made of wood, bamboo, metal, bone, ivory and plastic as well. Its length varies from 30 to 40 centimeters.

It will not be tricky if you know how to use chopsticks correctly. Firstly of all, you need a pair of chopsticks. Take or hold one chopstick between your thumb and middle finger. Hold the chopstick so that it lies at the base of your thumb and at the lower joint of your middle finger. It should not touch the forefinger.

Next, you take the other chopstick and place it between your thumb and forefinger. The side of the chopstick should rest against the tip of your thumb. Then, make sure the top of the chopstick is resting against the pad of your forefinger. Here, you have to make sure the tips of the chopsticks are parallel.

Now, you keep the first chopstick stationary and you can practise moving the second chopstick towards the stationary chopstick.

After few practices, you can try to position your chopsticks around a piece of food and practise eating your food with chopsticks. Have a little patience and practice, you will be able to use chopsticks easily to dine with the food.
